What is One Great Hour of Sharing?

Great Hour of Sharing calls United methodists to share the goodness of life with those who hurt- to provide water, supply food, and give relief from disasters. Your gifts to One Great Hour of Sharing lay the foundation for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to share God's love with communities everywhere. The special offering underwrites UNCOR's "costs of doing business." This helps UMCOR to keep the promise that 100 percent of any gift to a specific UMCOR project will go toward that project and not to administrative costs. Today, projects are undway in more than 100 countries, including the United States and Canada. In the 1990's, receipts exceeded $20 million annually.

Originally, in the 1940's, congregations reserved one special worship hour during the year for people of faith to contribute over and above their regular offerings.  Today different denominations celebrate One Great Hour of Sharing on various dates. Join United Methodists everywhere by participating in this special offering that supports UMCOR's vital work of restoration, healing and hope.  So much of what UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) does is about restoration. For example, giving sight to the blind, building up farming communities, helping workers to become self-sufficient and reconstructing places destroyed by disaster. Your gifts to One Great Hour of Sharing lay the foundation for UMCOR to bring restoration, healing and hope for tomorrow. One Great Hour of Sharing calls the Church to share the goodness of life with those who hurt and provides refuge and relief to some of the world's most vulnerable people during times of distress.
