OCCUMC Missions

OCCUMC Missions supports opportunities for members to do God’s work and grow as a faith community. The missions outreach includes local, state, national, and international efforts.   

Local Missions and Outreach

Alcoholics Anonymous - OCCUMC is home to a local chapter of AA that meets Monday nights at 7 pm in the lower level.

Baptismal Prayer Blankets - are quilted or knitted with prayer for the person being baptized.

Cathedral Center Milwaukee, WI - provides emergency shelter and case management services for women and families who are homeless or experiencing housing crisis. Volunteers from local churches provide an evening meal, a lunch for the next day and caring, social interaction. Once a month from April to October OCCUMC collects food to take to the center by five to six women of the church, to provide a hot, healthy meal, and bring smiles and fellowship.Their website is: https://www.womenshelters.org/det/cathedral-center-inc .

Eras Senior Network (Eras) - is an Interfaith program working with local faith congregations, social services, health communities and civic organizations to ensure safe transportation and various needs to seniors and adults with disabilities.

Food Pantry - OCCUMC maintains a year-round food pantry to help members of the church who are in need of assistance. The church has also been the recipient of food from some school food drives. The majority of the donations are provided by the members of the church. Some of the donations are shared with the Oak Creek Salvation Army and Interfaith.

Layette Program - makes up layettes for two local hospitals and a clinic: St. Francis, St. Luke's on 27th St. and 16th Street Clinic

Meadowmere - A group of volunteers known as "The Church Ladies" from OCCUMC, go to Meadowmere to assist with serving refreshments and interacting with the residents. They also help with the food for special events that reaches out into the community. 

Our Harmony Club - provides respite care for caregivers in our community. Our Harmony Club is a social day program, at an affordable price so caregivers can take time to themselves. Our Harmony Club is the only affordable social day program in all of WI and is 98% volunteer based. For more information about Our Harmony Club, please check out: www.ourharmonyclub.org

Prayer Pocket Squares - items are knitted with prayer and given to people in our congregation and the community to remember God’s love. 

State Missions  

Northcott Neighborhood House, Inc. - Milwaukee, WI - Northcott is a multi-purpose community center originated by the Wisconsin Annual Conference of the General Board of Global Ministries in 1961.  Some of their services include a food and clothing pantry, employment and training, GED classes, a community learning center, youth sports activities and after school and summer programs.  Over the years we have provided funding through donations. 

Northcott Giving Tree - The Giving Tree is used to collect toys for Christmas for the children at Northcott Neighborhood House. The Giving Tree is put up in the Friendship Room with tree tags that provide the children's names, ages, and type of gift for each child. The congregation brings gifts which are wrapped by church volunteers and delivered to Northcott in time for their Christmas party. Money is also collected for the party and the gift wrap.

School Supplies for UMCS - The Milwaukee Public School supply list is printed in the newsletter and bulletin for collection of school supplies in July. School Bus boxes are put in the Friendship Room to collect the school supplies that are delivered to UMCS the first week of August.

United Methodist Children Services (UMCS) - UMCS in Wisconsin, provides social work and supportive services through community building activities & classes, and other family services that help support the well-being of families. 

Women's Retreat - Usually held the last weekend of April at Lake Lucerne Camp, women from around the state and beyond, gather for faith and fellowship activities. Funds go through the UMW from prior retreats and early payments for the next year. A committee starts planning in October to get the Registration Form out by January, for the April 1st due date. A theme is chosen for the variety of workshops, group devotions, social time and worship.

Nation Missions  

Midwest Mission Distribution Center (MMDC) - MMDC is a disaster relief facility and caring ministry located in Chatham Illinois, related to the Great Rivers Conference and the North Central Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church. It receives donations from churches, organizations, businesses and individuals.  These donations are used to make health kits, personal dignity kits, school and teacher bags, school desks, layettes, birthing kits, sewing kits, bedding kits, children’s hospital gowns, quilts, medical equipment and cabinets, sewing machines, bicycles, cleaning buckets, and Personal Energy Transportation (P.E.T.) vehicles.  They are used locally, nationally and internationally.  Visit their website for more information: www.midwestmissiondc.org .

Youth and Adult Work Missions - OCCUMC supports week long missions for the Jr. and Sr. High youth.  

International Missions

Adult International Work Missions - OCCUMC supports extended work Mission trips outside of the US.  (i.e. Peru Trip Fall 2020)

United Methodist Committee (UMCOR) - United Methodist Committee On Relief, is a global ministry that requests special collections various times a year to assist in recovery and response events.(i.e. Blanket Sunday; Disasters, Cleaning & Hygiene kits)
